Objective of the Foundation

Stichting The September Institute aims to collect and allocate financial resources for projects related to Down syndrome in South Africa.

The foundation specifically supports:

  • financing therapy for children with Down syndrome who cannot afford care;

  • establishing and improving early-intervention centers;

  • providing knowledge, support, and practical tools to parents and professionals through the digital platform Small Steps Online.

The foundation has no profit motive, as stated in the articles of association (statutes).

Summary of the Policy Plan

For the years 2026–2028, the foundation focuses on the following priorities:

  1. Therapy Program in Pretoria (South Africa)
    In collaboration with the Down Syndrome Association Pretoria, the foundation funds monthly therapy days.
    A qualified therapist treats children with Down syndrome one day per month. The therapist invoices the foundation directly.
    These therapies are free for families.

  2. Expansion of Therapy Services
    Over time, the program will expand to more therapy days per month and additional therapy types (e.g., physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy).

  3. Small Steps Online (www.smallstepsonline.org)
    Maintaining and expanding the free global platform offering early-intervention modules, articles, practical exercises, and parent support.

  4. Funding and Sustainability
    Activities are funded through donations, subsidies, and contributions from the director’s private company.
    A modest continuity reserve is maintained to ensure long-term project stability.
